Make The Most Of Your Internet Connection By Networking DSLDo you have a DSL line? Do you also have more than one computer in your house? Perhaps a laptop? Did you know that you by creating a small home network you could share your DSL line between these computers? In this article we will look at some of the benefits of Networking DSL lines to get the most from your home computers. Obvious benefits of a network include the ability to share information or data between computers without having save it to a cd or disk first and the function of letting more than one computer share an internet connection simultaneously. One of the other great features of a network that is often overlooked is printer functionality. By setting up your computers on a network you are able to print from any one of them using just one printer. In fact, with a wireless network you can even hide this printer away from your computer(s) so it does not take up space in unwanted areas. Networking DSL is not uncommon and not even new. It has been around for a few years now but predominantly it was used by schools, businesses, and universities to create large networks for student and employees. More recently however it has been brought into the home and it's features are now endless. I have a Media Center computer and use it to store all of my music and video's. This means that not only do I no longer have to find CD's that I want to play (as they are all stored on the hard drive) but I can also access these from any computer in the house through Networking DSL. If I am sitting in the garden working on my laptop I can of course browse the internet wirelessly, but I can also play music that is stored on my desktop PC without having to go anywhere near it. This feature used to be fairly complicated to get up and running but is now far more user-friendly and can be done by most computer users. Networking DSL is made possible with the use of 'router'. A router can be wireless or wired but essentially performs the same task of sending and receiving data from multiple sources be it information from the Internet or from other PC's. The one thing you need to make sure of if you decide to use networking DSL is security, especially with a wireless set-up. When you transmit information wirelessly you give others nearby the opportunity to intercept that information. There is lots of great advice on how to stay secure but one of the key points is to have a good firewall in operation. Without this, you are asking for trouble. |
