DSL Speeds Of 200mbps?I have been an Internet user for well over 10 years years now. I remember buying my first multimedia computer. It had a CD drive, and even a sound card! No more bleeps. I was so excited and the envy of all my friends. I remember one of the CD's that came bundled was an animal encyclopedia. I ran the the CD and almost fell off my chair when I saw that I could actually watch a video clip of a tiger and hear sounds as well! Of course, this now all seems complete trivia and everybody has a soundcard and a cd drive. My PC now, is connected to my television and surround sound so I can watch DVD's or listen to music all through this. I don't even have a normal stereo system anymore. One thing that always annoyed me however was the Internet. I remember every time I connected and wanted to view a web page it would take up to a minute to load and if it had any pictures on the page I could wait up to 20 minutes. I would spend hours just trying to veiw one site. As for downloading things, it was completely out of the question. After five years or so things improved a little, normal web browsing was ok unless there were a lot of pictures, and I could download files with patience. One song usually took 2-3 hours. Moving forward a short time I heard something incredible that reminded me of that encylopedia CD. Broadband or DSL had hit the market. People were connecting 10, 20, and even 50 times faster than I ever had. What's more, with this new DSL speed line they could talk on the telephone and be connected to the Internet at the same time. Immediatly I did some research to find out how I could get it. This is where my excitedness turned into sadness. Living in a little village in the middle of nowhere meant that the DSL speed I was dreaming of was not going to happen for me. There was the option of a satelite connection but this was almost as much as my monthly rent. So I had to stick with dial up and my 56kbps modem for another couple of years while my friends in the local town were enjoying video streaming and downloading. Eventually I did get the DSL speed I had dreamed of but being in a village I am still light years behind some people. I connect at around 2.5mbps now but most people I know are achieving a DSL speed of about 8mbps. This however seems snail pace compared to a TV program I saw recently. This program once again reminded me of my first computer. The Program was about the company LG. There was a man doing an interview about his computer. I can't remember where he lived but get this. He was connecting at a massive DSL speed of 200mbps! Apparently this area had been geared up for years and all lines ran on fibre optics. I can't actually see why you would need a DSL speed quite this fast but it certainly makes my 2.5mbps look puny. Perhaps one day we will all have DSL speeds like this but for now i'll put up with what I have. I can do everything I need to at this speed and the cost is minimal. |
