Comparing DSL High Speed Internet And Cable

For some time now there had been a big debate on DSL broadband and Cable Internet connection. In the end you will probably become a definite supporter of one over the other, but their advantages and disadvantages are very similar so whatever your choice you will need to look closely to decide on the right choice for you.

DSL stands for Digital Describer Line. It is a method of technology designed to enable high speed data transfer using telephone lines without disturbing the voice service. It does this by using a higher frequency on the telephone line. The voice service only uses the lower frequencies and it was discovered that the higher frequencies could be used simultaneously to send and receive data.

Cable Internet works very similar to Cable TV. It uses the same line to send and receive data and can usually offer speeds of around 1.5mbps (Megabytes Per Second). It can be a lot faster than this but it really depends on web traffic and how many people are logged on at the same time.

So what does this mean to you? Cable Internet is usually cheaper than DSL, so if you want to connect at the lowest price then it may be wise to go for Cable. It can be a little slower than DSL but it is just as reliable and secure. DSL high speed Internet can be faster depending on what speed is available in your area. The further away from the telephone exchange you are, the slower your connection will be. This is because you lose signal strength over a distance. Overall, the speed comparison between the two is often the same so don't factor weigh too much on your decision.

Personally, I favor DSL high speed Internet, why? Well, to be honest I'm not too sure. Probably because it was the first option available in my area and it's what I am used to. I have never had Cable but because I am happy with what I have already I see no need to switch from one to the other.

Which ever service you decide on, the one thing you need to be careful about is security. No Internet connection is 100% safe and it is therefore very important that you take all possible steps to ensure the safety of your data. Make sure you have a good firewall as this will help prevent hackers interrupting and receiving your data. Also have a good anti virus package. This is so important now that I would not even connect to the Internet before having anti virus solution installed on my computer. Both a cable Internet and a DSL high speed internet connection provide so many benefits that once you're connected you will begin to wonder how you ever managed without them. I use my connection not just to browse the web, but for my online banking and bill payments, and downloading music and videos. What will you do with your high speed connection?
