The Benefits Of A DSL Always-On ConnectionIf you are thinking of switching from dial-up to a DSL connection then you will probably want to know what the benefits are in doing this. You will also want to know where to go to find the best DSL Service Provider for your money. Almost all DSL providers charge you monthly and contract you in for twelve months. This will mean that you will need to be sure of your choice before you sign. It is important to remember that once you have joined you will not be able to change providers for a whole year. There are many benefits with a high-speed DSL connection. First of all there is the obvious increase in connection speed. You will be able to load web pages much quicker than with dial-up, but also you will be able to download files far quicker. Here is an example. I download a lot of music, when I was using a Dial service provider it used to take me between two and four hours to download each song. Since switching to a DSL connection I have now reduced that time to around three minutes! And I don't even have the fastest connection because it is not available where I live. With some of the Ultra-fast DSL connections you can get things five times faster than even this. Another great thing about DSL is that when you are using the Internet, you can still use your telephone. If you use the Internet for long periods of time this can be really beneficial. The reason this works is because although your DSL connection uses the same line as your telephone, it works on a higher frequency so it won't disturb your calling needs. I find this especially helpful when I am talking to somebody and using my computer at the same time. For example, if I have a technical problem with my computer I can phone a technical support line and they can talk me through fixing the problem while I am still on the phone to them. With dial up, I couldn't do this unless I used a mobile phone. So, if this isn't enough, what other reasons might you have for choosing a DSL connection as oppose to dial-up? How about an always-on connection? With a dial-up service, you have to physically connect to your provider's service to use the Internet and disconnect when you have finished, (or when you want to use the phone). This means that often you will be paying for the service even during inactivity, a waste of money in my opinion. With DSL your PC connects when you boot up your computer and you can leave it connected until you switch your PC off again, without paying any more for the privilege. The final benefit of having a DSL connection is the price. When high-speed connections first became available they were expensive, and you had to pay a premium. However, things have changed in the last 3-5 years considerably. The price of a DSL connection now will not usually cost you any more than dial-up. So, if you can get all these extra benefits for the same price, why not join up and make the most of your computer? |
