Easy Steps To Setting Up A DSL Cable Router

If you want to connect to the internet then you're going to need some kind of router. There are to main types of router available. The first one Is a wireless DSL Router, and the second is a Cable DSL router. This device is what's used to connect your computer to your service providers network. Put simply, this means that you will be able to connect to the internet.

If you don't use a laptop then the chances are, (with a few exceptions) that a cable DSL router is the one you want. In most cases, when you sign up with a DSL service provider, they will supply you with one of these free of charge. However, this is not always the case. If you do need to purchase one then you can expect to pay between $50 and $150 depending on your specific needs.

Installing is very simple. There is no need for technical wizardary, and you won't need to call a technician no matter what your skill level is. If you can plug in your telephone or your TV then you should have no trouble installing your cable dsl router. Most routers nowadays have a USB interface. This means that you will not have to use an external power supply as the device will get it's power from your computer. This makes life even easier as you will only have 2-3 cables to plug in.

You will need to check manufacturers instructions here but this is how, (normally) you will go about getting connected. First of all, before even thinking about cables you need to insert the CD that came with your dsl cable router into your computers CD drive. It should run automatically but if not, run the program called set-up, or install. Follow the simple on-screen instructions and remove the CD from the drive. You may at this point have to re-start your computer. NOTE: If your router did not come with an installation CD then windows may recognise and install it when you plug it in. Otherwise try visiting the vendors website and downloading the install file that way.

Now you have your software installed it's time to get busy. Unplug your telephone from the Phone connection socket and plug your DSL/ADSL filter into the socket where your phone was, (this should also have come with your router but if not, you can buy one for less than $10). The other end of this filter will have two input connections. Plug your telephone into one and the DSL router cable into the other. Now check for a dial tone on your telephone.

Assuming all is ok so far then it's time to plug the other end of this cable into your router. You will see on your router that there is a USB cable attached to it. Plug this into a spare USB port on your computer. That's it. You should now be able to connect to the internet immediatley. If you do have any problems connecting then first of all check you have all cables in the right place. Then check that you have given the correct username and password. If you still have problems connecting with your cable DSL router then either visit the vendors website, (on another computer) or telephone your vendor. They will walk through the process with you and get your system running.
